In December of 2002, the first urban wind turbine in North America was erected on the Toronto waterfront by a joint venture partnership between Toronto Hydro Energy Services and the Windshare Cooperative, a group of 421 individuals and businesses( www.windshare.ca ). The machine stands in Exposition Park; around its base there is a viewing deck with various informational plaques explaining and promoting wind energy. The emission-free electricity produced by the Lagerway (a Dutch wind turbine manufacturer) windmill is distributed through the Toronto Hydro grid. A second wind turbine, to be installed at the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant in the east end of Toronto, is in the pre-development phase.
